The Decision a Machine Must Never Make

A machine can recognize a pattern. It cannot possess a conscience, love an enemy, repent, or answer before God.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and International Committee of the Red Cross President Mirjana Spoljaric have renewed their call for legally binding international rules on autonomous weapon systems. Their concern centers on weapons that use sensors, software, and artificial intelligence to identify and attack targets with diminishing human control.

Officials have carefully distinguished established facts from unconfirmed reports. Some military systems already use substantial automation, but claims that fully autonomous, AI-guided weapons have already killed people remain unconfirmed. The central question is the trajectory: whether human beings will surrender life-and-death judgment to machines.

A CHRISTIAN WORLDVIEW

Genesis 1:27 teaches that God created humanity in His own image. Human dignity is not awarded by governments, measured by usefulness, or calculated by algorithms. Even an enemy remains a human creature accountable to God and bearing God-given worth.

Christians may reasonably disagree about defense policy, treaties, and the regulation of emerging technology. But technological capability is not moral permission. Efficiency is not the highest good. A machine may assist human judgment, but it cannot carry moral responsibility or answer before God.

Jesus Christ did not save humanity from a safe distance. The Son took on flesh, entered our violent world, bore our sin, and conquered death through sacrificial love. Christian engagement with artificial intelligence must therefore remain grounded in truth, accountability, mercy, and the dignity of embodied human life.

THE CALL TO ACTION

Refuse the lazy assumption that whatever can be built should be built. Ask moral questions before convenience makes those questions seem impractical.

Pray for engineers, military leaders, diplomats, lawmakers, and soldiers. Ask God to give them courage to place human dignity above speed, prestige, and strategic advantage.

Choose one person with influence in technology, public policy, education, or ministry and ask: “What decisions are too human to delegate?” Begin a serious conversation rooted in the image of God.
